NATIVE PLANT LAWNS (with NON-INVASIVE CLOVER)

What we do is called Succession Planting. Rather than remove all top growth, damaging the soil below and allowing for the introduction of many more weeds—we thin and stress the existing plants, seeding carefully selected native plants alongside them and letting them gradually overtake the grass. Clover is used as a cover crop to assist native plants get established, then gradually recedes. It's a more eventual process, but kinder to the subsoil and has a greater chance of success in our climate. You will still need to mow a few times the first year—but each time the native plants (and clover) will respond by getting thicker and the grass will have a harder time keeping up.
